Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Archives and the Hollywood Bowl Museum, the Digital Archives Manager oversees the creation of a digital archive, cataloging the LA Phil’s 100-year history.    

Position Elements:

  • Provide dynamic and strategic leadership across the archives in order to deliver business and technical solutions that enable the archives to fulfill its missions and goals as the organization leads up to its Centennial celebration. 
  • Plan and execute short and long-range strategies; develop policies and procedures for the curation of born-digital materials in accordance with scalable industry methods.
  • Supervise archival team of 3-5 part-time staff members to implement standards-compliant organization, preservation, and retrieval of digitized, born-digital and traditional institutional assets while providing timely access for internal and external requests.
  • Manage, develop, and track digital initiatives; maintain documentation on workflows, procedures, and protocols; synthesize information for reports and presentations for the organization.
  • Contribute to the ongoing review of technologies and their application to collections management.
  • Support the full range of functions of digitization and continued care of legacy materials. 
  • In coordination with Director of Archives and Hollywood Bowl Museum, oversee audio and digital imaging projects, including producing estimates, developing plans and timelines, coordinating the work of digitization production either by third-party vendors or internal staff, and performing quality assurance.

Position Requirements:

  • Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited library school or M.A. with concentration in Archival Studies, Digital Curation, Moving Images or Records Management.
  • Demonstrated command of music history and familiarity with other performing arts.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience processing collections in a variety of formats; writing finding aid using Describing Archives: A Content Strategy (DACS); encoding archival finding aids in Encoded Archives Description (EAD); application of metadata content/ structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital objects (EAD, Dublin Core, Metadata Objects Description Schema (MODS)).
  • Demonstrated experience with digital assets management systems (DAMS), databases, information architecture, and digital archives workflows. 
  • Prior supervisory experience with proven record of success coordinating transition from analog to digital collections.
  • Demonstrated competence with current technologies used to process born-digital materials and digitize analog collections; coordinate web archiving, plan for long-term storage, and implement data migration and normalization.
  • Prior project management experience and advanced skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills; highly developed writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively with a wide range of stakeholders in a rapidly changing and innovative environment.
  • Effective problem solving, analytical, and organizational skills; excellent attention to detail to ensure adherence to standard and quality control.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a production-oriented, deadline- and project-driven environment.
  • Understanding of copyright, donor restrictions, and permissions issues related to the management of analog and born-digital materials.
  • Knowledge of XML, CSS, and other web standards; familiarity with graphic design principles.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Regularly required to sit performing desk-based computer tasks.
  • Regularly required to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart up to 50 pounds.  Ability to lift 30-pound boxes.
