MUSIC LIBRARIAN, The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own”

The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the U.S. Army’s premier musical organization, announces a vacancy for MUSIC LIBRARIAN.


A successful candidate will be a team player with a strong desire to work collaboratively. Ability to work at a professional level and take direction from superiors, while operating in a positive and consultative small-team environment is imperative. Must have strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills. Must be dedicated to being proactive in improving processes, ideas, and contributing in ways that keep with industry standards worldwide. Work hours are generally 8:00am – 4:00pm.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Staff Librarian is responsible for all sheet music needs including duplicating parts, stuffing folders, self-publishing music, repairing damaged parts, buying new music, facilitating rental contracts, ensuring that proper licensing of music for recordings and performance is legal and meets current copyright laws.


Additional responsibilities include care and management of a music library that houses over 100,000 titles that include piano vocal lead sheets to full concert band and orchestral works. This position requires knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Access and Excel. As a service organization, librarians field inquiries from many sources within and outside our organization, so having strong communication skills is imperative. There is an ever-growing need for a Music Licensing Specialist – securing answers to all music licensing concerns, most notably: Permissions to Arrange (PTA), Mechanical Rights (fees to record songs), Synchronization Rights (syncing music with visual images) and matters of music copyright.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • A background in music and knowledge of instrumental music repertoire

  • An interest in and commitment to providing positive and helpful service to all library users (civilian and military)

  • Proficiency with MS Office with emphasis on Word, Excel, Outlook and Access;

  • Excellent organizational, verbal communication, and written communication skills

  • The ability to work both quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail

  • Superb interpersonal skills and willingness to work as part of a team


DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Digital media experience

  • Knowledge of database organization

  • Experience in managing a music library

  • Experience with copyright law and related music licensing requirements

  • Experience in managing government contracts

  • Degree in Music


ELIGIBILITY

All applicants must have U.S. citizenship due to a security clearance requirement. All invited applicants will be given instructions to coordinate pre-screening with their regional Military Entrance Processing Station to ensure they meet entrance requirements for enlistment in The U.S. Army prior to attending the live interview. Individuals who are offered the position following the live interview must enlist and begin Basic Combat Training prior to their 35th birthday.

Interviews will be held at Brucker Hall, home of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” at 400 McNair Road, Fort Myer, Virginia 22211-1306.


Travel expenses for civilians will be paid for by The U.S. Army pending enlistment qualification and funding approval. Military personnel should refer to their respective units to request travel funding.
