List of Previous Goals and Progress Made

  1. 2021 ETSC survey.
    • ETSC members surveyed MLA members to determine programming at TechHub 2022. Results will also be used to help determine programming at TechHub 2023.
  2. TechHub 2022.
    • Originally envisioned as a drop-in session with a variety of simultaneous technology-related discussion groups, the committee redesigned the session for online delivery in 2021 using Remo, and again in 2022 using Zoom. The committee analyzed results from the 2021 ETSC survey of the MLA membership, and 2022 breakout rooms included:
      • Data Visualization Tools (Gephi by Maristella Feustle)
      • Instructional Resource content creation/management tools (Canva by Christine Edwards; Hathi Download Helper by Woody Colahan
      • Video Tutorial Creation Tools (Camtasia by Bonnie Finn)  
      • Audio/Video Editing Tools (Audacity by Kathy Essmiller)  
      • Instructional software tools (Kaltura uploader by Marci Cohen)
      • Digital Audio Workstation Tools (GarageBand by Chris Schiff)
    • The session topped out at with 28 simultaneous participants, and due to high engagement of participants, Zoom recorded 170 participants (reflecting participants entrances into different breakout rooms). 72 people had indicated interest in Sched. Some presenters created video tutorials that will be archived in the Humanities Commons.
  3. Other initiatives to support emerging technologies and services education.
    • ETSC is investigating additional options for educational activities, including webinars with the Education Committee, Data Carpentry workshops, and a Wikidata workshop.

List of Future Goals

  1. TechHub 2023.
    • Strategic goal area 2 (Develop and retain membership). Objective 2.2: Offer mentorship and networking opportunities for members at all stages of career.
    • ETSC proposed TechHub at the 2023 annual meeting with topics identified from the 2021 ETSC survey and other current trends. Current discussions include recruiting speakers and hybrid approaches for remote participation in discussions.
  2. ETSC blog on Humanities Commons.
    • Strategic goal area 2 (Develop and Retain Membership) Objective 2.3 (Explore education and networking opportunities beyond annual and chapter conferences)
    • Goal Area 3: Cultivate Inclusivity. Objective 3.2: Draw on member expertise by offering informal educational workshops, webinars, and panels that make use of virtual meeting platforms.
    • ETSC members are working with the web manager to create a blog on the Humanities Commons. Initial posts will be videos from 2022 TechHub, and members will contribute monthly blog posts. 
  3. CMC contacted ETSC about updating the Music Discovery Requirement documents. ETSC currently only has one member with expertise in this area, and proposed that CMC should lead the revision with a liaison from ETSC. Conversations are ongoing. 
    • Goal Area 1: Organize Strategically. Objective 1.4: Review MLA’s publications and determine if these publications support MLA’s strategy.
    • Goal Area 2: Develop and Retain Membership. Objective 2.6: Promote MLA as being an Association that will advocate for our profession, our members, our users, our institutions and for diversity.
