List of Previous Goals and Progress Made

  • 1. Plan and hold 2022 PNWMLA Chapter Meeting
    • PNWMLA 2022 Business Meeting was held virtually on May 6, 2022.
    • Agenda for the 2022 PNWMLA Chapter Meeting included the annual treasurer report, adoption of minutes from the previous year’s meeting, creation of a nominating committee for selecting a Vice Chair, the planning of arrangements for the 2023 Meeting, introduction of Janet Hilts and the MLStEP group of emerging music librarians to the PNWMLA Chapter, and participation in a Round Robin.
  • 2. Plan and hold 2023 PNWMLA Chapter Meeting
    • The original plan from the 2022 Chapter Meeting was to hold the 2023 annual Chapter Meeting in person in Victoria, B.C.. Since we were unable to meet in person in May 2023 for this year’s annual Chapter Meeting due to continuing concerns over travelling during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we decided to delay our meeting to gather more interest and to give presenters time to prepare for their presentations. We also decided to hold the PNWMLA Chapter Meeting virtually over Zoom on August 18, 2023 from 1PM to 3PM.
    • Ann Shaffer and Mitch Hughey gave a presentation about their collaboration to create a guitar lending collection for academic libraries. Their summary/excerpt of the topics and scope of their presentation, entitled, “While My Guitar Gently Circulates: Building a Guitar Lending Collection in an Academic Library,” follows below:
    • “Ann Shaffer (Music and Dance Librarian) and Mitch Hughey (Music Cataloger and Metadata Technician) were recently awarded a Richard and Mary Corrigan Solari Faculty Incentive Award by the University of Oregon Libraries to create a small guitar lending library in UO’s Knight Library Music Collection. Mitch had previously established a similar collection for the Dallas (OR) Public Library, while Ann had experience with successful projects in the UO Libraries funded by this annual grant award.  We’ll discuss how we adapted an idea first implemented for a small public library community for the needs and interests of a large academic community that includes a NASM-accredited music school in order to write a successful funding proposal: including getting buy-in from stakeholders, aligning with the library’s strategic agenda, and using this proposal to lay the groundwork for other needed changes and future innovations.”
    • Additionally, the 2023 PNWMLA Chapter Business Meeting was held, including the treasurer report, adoption of minutes from the 2022 meeting, introduction to the meeting agenda by Past Chair Dylan Burns, discussion of agenda, and a round robin as in past years’ meetings. Members attending the 2023 PNWMLA Chapter Business Meeting included: Bill Blair, Dylan Burns, Reed David, Cate Gerhart, Casey Miller, Kathlyn Miller, Marian Ritter, Ann Shaffer, Bob Tangney, Kirsten Welsch, and Sara Wallace
  • 3. Continuing Outreach through MLStEP
    • Our chapter worked with MLStEP and MLStEP liaisons for outreach and to provide opportunities to student and early career Music Library Association members in the Pacific Northwest Chapter.
    • Mitch Hughey, the current MLStEP liaison, met with 2022-2023 Vice Chair, Sara Wallace, over Zoom on May 5, 2023, to brainstorm about ideas for how the PNWMLA Chapter can work with MLStEP to provide opportunities for mutual growth and mentorship with the current chapter members.
    • Mitch Hughey worked with Ann Shaffer to present their joint project, “While My Guitar Gently Circulates: Building a Guitar Lending Collection in an Academic Library” for the virtual 2023 Chapter Meeting, with scope as described in the GOAL 2 section above.
