    • Course IS530MAO, “Music Librarianship and Bibliography,” is offered in spring semester each year. It can be taken for 2 or 4 credits, and is open to students at the iSchool and at other schools in the WISE (Web-based Information Science Education) consortium (see http://www.wiseeducation.org/). By the end of this course, students should be able to: Identify the skills and training needed to be a music librarian; Recognize the needs of music scholars/performers, including how to provide and assess services to them; Understand the issues surrounding music collections such as how to search for, acquire, organize, describe, assess, conserve, and provide access to those collections; Understand and evaluate the information sources/tools and processes used both by music scholars and librarians.

    • INFO 5367, Music Librarianship & Information Services: This class covers a wide range of topics designed to equip students with the skills necessary for working in and managing a music library. Students will gain experience with the essential bibliographic tools of music libraries and learn about the history of music librarianship in the United States and its major figures. Reference assignments will familiarize students with the variety of challenges encountered in answering library patrons’ questions. Students will become familiar with the authoritative editions of works by major composers, and with the important journals in the field of music librarianship. Other subjects covered include special collections, digitization and metadata, cataloging, collection development, and outreach.
